Health impact of war in Ukraine and Gaza

The wars in Ukraine and Gaza have devastated the healthsystems in both countries.

Millions of people in the war zones face the threat of death, disability, fear, trauma, hunger and malnutrition, lack of clean water, and the risk of contracting infectious diseases. Those displaced within the country, who number 3.6 million in Ukraine, are also experiencing similar problems. Around 2.2 million people are in need of health care assistance. A recent WHO report shows that healthcare facilities in areas along the war front in Ukraine have been severely damaged. Many healthcare facilities have been looted and robbed. In addition, the military occupation has reduced the availability of resources and health care workers in unoccupied areas.

A recent report by the European Training Foundation (ETF) onthe war in Gaza estimates that by May 2025, around 1.9 million people will be internally displaced in Gaza. Many family members have been forced to move multiple times. More than 660,000 children do not have access to school and the unemployment rate has increased from 45% before the war to 80% in May 2025.
These difficult conditions are reducing the quality of life for the people of Gaza.
