TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan has reported 18 confirmed mpox cases so far in October, the highest monthly total in two years, the Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday.
Sixteen patients had clade Ib infections, according to a CDC press release. They were in their 20s to 40s and had engaged in higher-risk sexual behavior, while only two had previously received an mpox vaccine.

Taiwan recorded 52 confirmed cases this year as of Oct. 19, including 41 locally acquired and 11 imported infections. The CDC urged eligible people to complete the two-dose vaccination series. As of the end of September, 31,927 people, or 28% of those who had received at least one dose, had yet to receive their second shot.
Two doses provide about 90% protection, compared with 40% to 80% for one dose, the agency said. Vaccination can also reduce the severity of symptoms if infection occurs.
