Current News: UK loses measles elimination status as vaccine rates fall

The UK has officially lost its measles-free status as vaccination rates for the MMR jab have fallen to their lowest levels in over a decade. According to the World Health Organization, the decline in uptake – which has dropped significantly below the 95% target required for herd immunity – has allowed the virus to become endemic once again. This resurgence resulted in over 3,600 cases in 2024 and the tragic, preventable death of a child, signaling a serious setback for national public health.
In response, the NHS is overhauling its immunization strategy by introducing a new "four-in-one" vaccine that includes protection against chickenpox, set to launch in 2026. Additionally, the second dose of the vaccine will now be administered at 18 months instead of age three or four to ensure children are protected much earlier. Health officials are urged parents to check their children's records and book catch-up appointments to help curb the spread and eventually regain the country's elimination status.
